Why background checks are not the place to take shortcuts
What a proper nanny background check covers, and why references and a social media review matter as much as the criminal search.
What does a nanny background check include?
A thorough nanny background check includes identity verification, criminal history searches, sex offender registry checks, and, if the nanny will drive, a motor vehicle record.
At ms. nanny, every candidate also goes through reference checks and a social media review before we present her to a family.
Why are reference checks so important?
References tell you how a nanny actually behaves with children, which a background check cannot.
Speak with at least two recent families, ask why the job ended, and ask whether they would hire the nanny again. Hesitation is information.
Is a free online background check enough?
No. Free online searches are often incomplete and can miss records from other counties or states.
Use a reputable screening provider that searches the counties and states where the nanny has lived, and get the nanny's written consent first.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the nanny's permission for a background check?
Yes. Under federal law, you must get the candidate's written consent before running a background check through a screening company.
Does ms. nanny run background checks?
Yes. Every nanny we present has passed a background check, reference checks, and a social media review.
Should I check a nanny's driving record?
Yes, if she will drive your children. A motor vehicle record shows violations and license status.
